GIVING LIMERICK A BAD NAME

Sir, - The last thing I wish to do is stoke the fires of paranoia in relation to Limerick's reputation as a violent city, but I feel compelled to comment on your paper's coverage on February 26th of a Kerry Criminal Circuit Court case. My attention was drawn to the heading of the piece, which read "Limerick man jailed for appalling' bottle attack". However, on reading the piece I find that the guilty person had an address in Killainey, Co Kerry.

I read further to discover that he is currently serving a sentence in Limerick prison, and make the possible connection. The mind boggles!

In future, are all "guests of the State" resident in the local prison to be classed as Limerick people? I can only imagine what this will do for Limerick's criminal statistics, not to mind the city's rather unfair and largely media-driven reputation for violent crime. - Yours, etc.,
