Madam, – Over the past days, a number of letters have unfairly berated Ivana Bacik. They accuse her of being hypocritical in her criticism of the blasphemy law as she condemns others for expressing their views.
However, her objection is to a true limitation of the freedom of speech – where the force of law can be used to suppress an opposing viewpoint.
To oppose or to denounce or, even, to offend are not forms of such legal suppression, and Senator Bacik should be entitled to these, as I am sure she would demand them for those who disagree with her.
If I may paraphrase Voltaire: I will laugh myself silly at those who worship a tree stump, but will defend to the death their right to do it. – Yours, etc,
