Sir, - Has Garret FitzGerald (Opinion, April 22nd) joined Noddy in Toyland? How much longer are we expected to swallow the story of Diddums, the really good, kind and upright politician/planner tempted beyond reason by the really corrupt businessman?

Get a grip, Garret! It is the nature of the businessman to buy what he needs. That's what he does for a living. Our esteemed elected officials, on the other hand, are specifically charged with upholding the integrity of our lives and our environment. That's what they are supposed to do for a living.

When the really, really corrupt businessman approaches the really, really well-intentioned politician with a bribe, there is only one response for the politician to take. It runs like this:

"You are offering me a bribe for my vote. That is against the law. Not only do I refuse to take your bribe, I shall inform the relevant authorities that you have made this offer."

It's that simple. And to help this process along, there are actual laws in our statute books covering this very topic. An end to this digging and poking at the sores of our society!
