A chara, - We are quick to condemn our Taoiseach and other leading politicians when it suits, but slow to praise on truly historic occasions.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has helped to achieve a potentially momentous agreement to deliver everlasting peace on our island. No Taoiseach in the history of the State has dedicated such time and effort to resolving the age-old conflict in Northern Ireland. When some people carped from the sidelines, as recently as last March, Bertie Ahern and Tony Blair stood shoulder to shoulder and stayed the course.
Let us give credit where credit is due. Politicians of conviction, such as Mr Ahern, have given teenagers like me the opportunity to live in an Ireland where politics isn't ruled by the gun and the threat of violence. - Is mise,
