Sir, Fr Michael Commane's article (February 8th) can hardly be considered the result of serious and extensive research, based as it is on one week's analysis of two newspapers. He admits as much.

The analysis was a short college project". The fact that he had the choosing of the week, and conveniently chose a week which supported his point of view, leaves his claim less than convincing.

Dissatisfaction with the media is not because of the amount of coverage, or lack of it, which the Church receives but because of the quality of the coverage received. Compare the treatment of the Catholic Church with the kid glove treatment accorded other religions. That is the cause of dissatisfaction.

Michael missed that point, a serious error for a budding journalist. Little wonder he finds himself "at odds with the hierarchical Church when it comes to condemning media coverage of the churches".
