Sir, – Minister for Health James Reilly argues the workplace smoking ban was successful because people obeyed the ban (Home News, July 27th). However, the purpose of the ban was not compliance in itself but an improvement in the health of those in the workplace. The employees of bars and restaurants had no choice in whether or not they worked in a smoky atmosphere and thus many people accepted the ban.
He is now considering a ban on all smoking in cars for health reasons, even if no children are present. Whose health will this protect? Mine? Mind your own business, Dr Reilly. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – Would the banning of smoking in cars reduce the drag on such vehicles? – Yours, etc,
