Aftermath of Meath East byelection

Sir, – However predictable the byelection result ,the degree of venom it revealed for Labour in government came as a shock.  The same party that chose to wait in the ground-breaking 1918 election, followed by a policy of neutrality in the Civil War, now suffers the humiliation inflicted by the voters of Meath East for its principled stand in government.

The result also reveals an extraordinary example of antagonism between theory and practice:  we concede abjectly that our economy has been badly mismanaged but woebetide Labour – the soft mark in government, the scapegoat – when it contributes to restoring rationality.  Keep the ship on course. – Yours, etc,
