A historic sporting day

Madam, — May I be the first to suggest on your pages that Declan Kidney be made taoiseach

Madam, — May I be the first to suggest on your pages that Declan Kidney be made taoiseach. His spirit of honest effort, truth and integrity are sorely needed in government right now, and could encourage a greater sense of teamwork from all parties. — Yours, etc,

A chara, – It was a fantastic for Ireland to win the Grand Slam. However, I would urge caution to any politicians attempting to bask in reflected glory based on this wonderful achievement. The period following our previous slam (the 1950s) probably saw the highest emigration levels since the foundation of the State. Will history repeat itself in the coming years? Let the country celebrate, but keep the pseudo-politicians who got us into the current mess out of any celebrations. – Yours, etc.
