Sir, – Michael McDowell complains about largely empty buses passing us down often deserted bus lanes in the inner city (“Dublin’s planners are failing to help our capital to flourish”, Opinion, October 26th). Like too many motorists (presumably the “us” who are passed), he is oblivious to the three-quarters empty cars which clog up limited road space.
Person for person, they take up more road space than even largely empty buses. He also points out that some people have no choice but to drive for the weekly shop to Lidl or Aldi. Most would agree that using a car is sometimes unavoidable for some.
However, the central issue is how to bring about a situation where people use public transport when it is not necessary to use a car.
