WASHINGTON - The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly yesterday to ban federal funds for physician assisted suicide, entering an emotional battle about how suffering people die.

The measure is largely symbolic, because no state allows assisted suicide. But the Supreme Court is expected to rule in July on two cases that could establish a constitutional right to assisted suicide or pave the way for states to legalise it.
