Two teenagers from Northern Ireland have been shot and injured on the holiday island of Ibiza after being caught up in a gun battle between rival drug gangs.

The British Foreign Office said neither of the teenagers had life threatening injuries and their consul on the Spanish island was due to see them later today.

The teenagers, understood to be from Bangor and Holywood, Co Down, were wounded outside a beach front nightclub in the centre of San Antonio on Monday night.

The innocent youngsters, aged 18 and 19 are believed to have only arrived in on the holiday island two days before.

One suffered a face wound and has been detained in hospital where he is in a stable condition, while the other suffered a flesh wound to the chest and was discharged after treatment. A teenage friend holidaying with the two escaped the shooting as he was still in the club.

Bullets flew when the occupants of a BMW X5 and a Seat Leon exchanged fire. Up to 20 shots were said to have been fired. "They were shooting with no regard for tourists and passers-by," said police on the island, who were reported to have made a number of arrests.

Officers said they believed the shoot-out was between rival gangs selling drugs to holidaymakers. mfl
