THE Government has nominated the former Democratic Left TD, Mr Pat McCartan, and Mr Joseph G Mathews SC for appointment by the President, Mrs Robinson, as judges of the Circuit Court.

Mr McCartan, who lives in Co Wicklow, established the solicitors' practice of M. D. White and Co in Dublin in the mid 1970s. His former partner, Mr Michael White, was appointed to the Circuit Court last year.

Mr McCartan was elected to Dublin City Council in 1985 and entered the Dail as TD for Dublin North East in 1987, representing the Workers' Party and Democratic Left. He returned to his legal practice, McCartan and Hogan, solicitors, after the 1992 general election.
