Madrid - Spanish police yesterday found a van they suspect to be carrying explosives destined for an attack by Basque separatist guerrillas ETA, an Interior Ministry official said.

The vehicle was found abandoned in the same area of northeastern Spain where a similar van loaded with one tonne of explosives was stopped on Monday, foiling a plot by the separatist rebels.

Meanwhile, an ETA prisoner, Inaki Arizkuren, entered the 52nd day of his hunger strike yesterday. His condition was described as "critical" by Sinn Fein Assembly member, Mr Alex Maskey, who added "this is a very serious development for him and his family, and for the Basque Country as whole". Twenty prisoners are participating in the hunger strike, demanding an end to their dispersion to jails outside the Basque Country.
