The Spanish authorities are seeking the extradition of an Irish man in connection with his wife's death during a holiday in Spain nearly two years ago, writes Elaine Keogh.

Last night Mr Michael "Dermot" McArdle (32), a native of Dundalk, was in custody to appear before Dublin District Court this morning on foot of an extradition warrant from Spain.

Mr McArdle and his wife Kelly-Anne (28), lived at Wheaton Hall, Drogheda. She died on February 13th last year in Marbella.

At the time it was believed that Kelly-Anne, a mother of two young children, died after accidentally falling from the balcony of the apartment in which they were staying.

Spanish police launched an investigation into the circumstances of her death, which happened on the first day of the week-long holiday.

As a result of their findings, including those of the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem, the authorities decided that her husband should be extradited to Spain.

They issued a warrant for his arrest and yesterday morning he was arrested by detectives based in the extradition section in Dublin.
