Beijing - China has been hit by its second fire tragedy in a week, with seven women workers killed in a pre-dawn blaze at a handicrafts workshop dormitory yesterday, Miriam Donohoe reports.

The fire broke out in the factory in Yanhong town, in Guangdong province in south China, and was burning for three hours before being brought under control. According to an official the factory was owned by the town government. He declined to say how many people were in the dormitory at the time.

The dormitories were attached to the factory to accommodate young migrant women from other regions, despite the fact that it was against regulations.
