Sabena strike 'not affecting flights'

Sabena flights are operating on a normal schedule, despite a 24-hour strike called by unions.

The Belgian carrier says no flights have had to be delayed or cancelled as a result of the strike, as enough replacement personnel had been found.

It says only two of the four unions, including baggage handlers and cleaning services, are on strike.

Despite government promises to offer financial help for staff laid off as part of Sabena's restructuring programme, two unions decided yesterday that the pledge was not enough and called a strike.

All unions are demanding that the government beef up its commitment beyond the 2 billion francs already promised under an earlier plan.

They say job cuts are expected to exceed the original target of 1,500, and could possibly reach 6,000 - half of the airline's total workforce.

Sabena obtained protection from creditors last week in an attempt to salvage itself from insolvency.

The Belgian government gave it a bridging loan of €125 million and told it to reinvent itself as a slimmed-down company focusing on European routes.

Sabena says it's unsure whether the partial strike will affect flights this afternoon or over the weekend.
