The Irish Red Cross Society has appealed for aid for North Korea, which is facing severe food shortages since floods destroyed food stocks and harvests in 1995 and 1996.

The Red Cross is starting to distribute food to 700,000 people who are currently surviving on 150g of rations per person, less than one third of the minimum recommended subsistence level.
