San Carlos - Where once British paratroopers fought hand-to-hand with an Argentine enemy, Prince Charles yesterday looked out over the battlefield of the Falkland Islands.

He had come to pay his respects at the spot where Col H Jones VC fell under a hail of machine-gun bullets, leading his troops to victory at Goose Green.

The prince, who is Colonel-in-Chief of the Paratroop Regiment, looked solemn as he laid a wreath at the foot of the 2 Para Memorial on a hillside overlooking the remote settlement of a dozen homesteads on Choiseul Sound, 8,000 miles from Britain.
