The President, Mrs McAleese, has agreed to become the sole patron of the Irish Association of Suicidology. The association's president, Fine Gael TD Mr Dan Neville, welcomed the decision as "a great honour and a source of great encouragement".
The body was established two years ago to help the bereaved, facilitate communication between various professions and promote awareness of the problem.
