Australian police say they expect to arrest a man, already in custody on unrelated charges, for the disappearance and suspected murder of Briton Peter Falconio and abduction of his girlfriend.

Mr Falconio and Ms Joanne Lees were ambushed while on holiday as they drove along a remote desert highway last year.

Police from the Northern Territory said the possible breakthrough in the 15-month old outback crime followed DNA testing on the prisoner held by police in another state.

Police tested his DNA against that found on the clothing of Ms Lees after the attack on the Stuart Highway on July 14th, 2001.

Peter Falconio's body has never been found, but blood at the scene matched his DNA.

Ms Lees said she was bound and gagged in the attack but was able to flee and hide in the bush, eventually flagging down a truck driver after the gunman drove off.
