After studying mathematics, philosophy and music in Romania, he left in 1936 for Germany, where he took over the Berlin orchestra in 1945.
Between 1962 and 1971 he conducted the Stockholm orchestra before taking over the Munich philharmonic in 1980. After the fall of the Ceausescu regime in late 1989 he returned several times to his native land where he had planned to arrange a new tour of the Berlin philharmonic in October.
