Actress and model Elizabeth Hurley has unveiled a provocative new image to coincide with the launch a new range of Estee Lauder cosmetics, for which she is the figure head.

The make-up is from its Gold range, lip, eye and skin products designed to produce a shimmering sheen.

President Roman Herzog of Germany paid silent tribute to Britain's war dead yesterday by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey. Mr Herzog placed the wreath of carnations, roses and ferns in the colours of the German flag on the grave circled by poppies.

The president and his wife Christiane bowed their heads and stood in silence as the Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev Dr Wesley Carr, said prayers.

Actress Prunella Scales, best known as Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, criticised the BBC yesterday for a lack of commitment to its "drama repertoire" on both radio and TV. She questioned BBC bosses about what she saw as a lack of output of newly-commissioned and classic plays. She claimed only six plays longer than 60 minutes had been broadcast on BBC Radio in a year.

Miami Beach police yesterday were investigating the theft of $250,000 worth of antique watches from the heavily guarded house of Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan and her husband.

The American jazz trumpeter and composer Roy Burrowes (72), who has died, played with such greats as Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Sonny Rollins.

Burrowes, who died of lung cancer in a London hospital, was born in Jamaica but took US citizenship in the 1950s and spent much of the last 50 years in New York.

He was a member of Ellington's legendary band for 2 1/2 years in the 1960s and made 12 recordings with them. He also played for Rollins, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin.

Triple Oscar winner Freddie Young, hailed as one of the world's great film cameramen for his magnificent images in Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Zhivago, has died at the age of 96.

Young, whose first job in the industry was as the teaboy in a British silent film studio, won inter national acclaim for his work with director David Lean.
