A number of penguins in Belfast Zoo have been beaten with iron bars and one was thrown into the lions' enclosure and killed, the RUC has said.
The RUC is investigating attack at the zoo on the Antrim Road which occurred late last night or early this morning.
It is believed beer cans were found at the scene of the incident.
