A man has died in a house fire in Dublin.

The fire broke out at the house in Nurney Lawns, Donaghmede at about 11pm last night.

A 50-year-old man died and a 48-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious burn injuries.

A spokesman for Dublin Fire Brigade said the woman was found upstairs on the landing while the man was downstairs when fire fighters arrived.

The woman was revived at the scene, but the man could not be revived despite efforts by the fire crew.

Two units of the fire brigade, from North Strand and Kilbarrack, fought the fire. It is not yet clear what caused it, the spokesman said.

The house has been sealed off for a forensic examination to determine the cause of the blaze.

The fire brigade spokesman said last night had been "very busy", with many callouts for Dublin Fire Brigade ambulances up to 6.30am.

Alcohol-related calls accounted for many of the callouts during the busiest part of the night, the spokesman said.

Any road crashes in the capital were of a "minor" nature, however.
