A landslide in the remote central highlands of Papua New Guinea has killed at least eight people, as the search continues for another 22 missing people.

The landslide struck as villagers slept, in Morobe province, about 120 miles north of the capital, Port Moresby, The Post-Couriernewspaper said.

Rescuers have retrieved the bodies of as many as eight people from mud and debris following the disaster.

Morobe Provincial Administrator, Mr Manasupe Zurenuoc, said another 22 villagers were missing, believed buried in the mud, and four were in hospital, one with a serious leg injury.

Officials believe the landslide occurred when one side of a cliff fell into a river, washing mud on to the homes.

Mr Zurenuoc said the province had experienced heavy rains for the past few weeks, as well as a small earthquake on Monday, which may have contributed to the landslide.
