A Limerick man, Owen Timothy Shiels (24), was yesterday jailed for 12 years for murder by a court in Malaga in southern Spain. It found him guilty of the murder of his lover, Mr Brian Smith, of Lancashire. The trial was held last June.

The murder took place on May 21st, 1995, in the apartment shared by the couple in Fuengirola. The court heard that on the night of the murder, Mr Smith had arrived home drunk, and during a violent argument Shiels strangled him. Shiels admitted they had an argument, but denied killing him.
