An inquest has head a youth died of cardiac arrest after being accidentally struck in the chest by a teammate during a hurling match in Cork last year.

Kevin Quinn (18) from Boherash, Glanworth received the blow to the chest from a teammate which triggered ventricular arrhythmia and led to cardiac arrest.

The incident happened during a match between Mr Quinn's local team, Harbour Rovers from Glanworth in North Cork and Newtownshandrum at Shanballymore on August 13 th, 2004.

Around four minutes into the game Mr Quinn clashed with a teammate, Pat O'Brien. He fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

Mr Quinn died on the pitch, died, despite the efforts of a doctor, a nurse and an ambulance crew to resuscitate him.

Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster told the inquest in Mallow that Mr Quinn had suffered commotio cordis, which occurs when somebody receives a blunt force trauma during sporting activity.

The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
