Businessman plans to name his debtors

A Cavan town businessman, who claims he is owed over €100,000 by debtors, has said he will name and shame some of them by putting up a list of names at his shop this morning.

Owen Smith, who runs a timber flooring business in the town, went on local radio station Shannon Side Northern Sound yesterday to outline his dilemma.

He and his partner run C S Flooring in College Street. They have been in business for 10 years but are now facing a bad debts problem.

“I would like to thank all the people who supported us over the 10 years,” Mr Smith said, “but . . . unfortunately at the minute it is the bad debts that are dragging us down, it is a cash-flow problem and the problem is that some of the guys I have dealt with seem to think they can walk away from the debts.”

Starting today, he said he would name at least half of the 15 or so debtors who owe him money since 2002 but he added: “I will name the rest of them next week if they don’t pay up.” He said he consulted his solicitors about the legality of publicly issuing a list of debtors and has been told that he is legally entitled to do so.

Guilty in body in freezer case

A Galway man has pleaded guilty to unlawfully killing a Dublin man whose frozen body was found in a freezer behind a fishmonger’s shop in Galway city in June 2007.

Edward Griffin (45), Cimín Mór, Cappagh Road, Salthill, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the manslaughter of Patrick McCormack (52) at Henry Street, Galway, between June 1st and September 30th, 2002. Mr Justice Paul Carney will sentence Griffin on May 5th, when evidence in the case will be heard.

Remanded over brother’s death

A young woman charged in connection with the death of her brother, who was stabbed at a house party, has been remanded on continuing bail. Caroline Brennan (18), Navan Road, is charged with assault causing serious harm to her brother Michael Brennan (22).

Mr Brennan died during a party at his uncle’s house at Barrack Street, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, shortly after 3.30am on December 30th.

He was discovered with a knife wound to his upper body.

Ms Brennan appeared before Castlecomer District Court yesterday. State solicitor Gerry Meaney told Judge William Harnett that he had just received the file and anticipated there would be more serious charges brought.

Mr Meaney applied for a one-month adjournment to the case and asked for an extension of time for the service of the book of evidence. Michael Lanigan, solicitor for Ms Brennan, said he had no objection to the State’s applications.

Judge Harnett remanded Ms Brennan on continuing bail to appear at Castlecomer District Court on March 16th.
