Daughter alleges father raped her

A north county Dublin woman has told a Central Criminal Court jury she was raped by her father before she made her First Holy Communion and was sexually abused by him for about nine years. The jury was also told by defence counsel Denis Vaughan Buckley SC that evidence would be given that the complainant's father was not in Ireland at the time of the alleged rape in May 1988.

The man (58) has pleaded not guilty to one charge of raping his daughter, 18 of indecently assaulting her and nine of sexually assaulting her on dates between 1985 and 1994. The alleged victim, now 25, said in reply to prosecuting counsel Paddy McCarthy SC that her father sexually abused her regularly from the time she was five until she reached puberty.

Four years for abuse of niece

A Dublin man who was 14 when he indecently assaulted his then four- or five-year-old niece whom he was baby-sitting has been jailed for four years by Judge Donagh McDonagh.

The now 33-year-old man is the victim's paternal uncle. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday to one count of indecent assault on her on a date unknown between 1986 and 1988 at her home in Cabra west.

Judge McDonagh suspended the final 3 years of the sentence for the offence which he said was on the lower end of the scale in comparison to other matters of the same nature that come before the court.

"Cases of this nature are horrific for victims of sexual abuse and this case is not different in the horror it inflicted on a young girl. This court, however, is not a vengeful tribunal."
