HUNGARY'S application to join the European Union is the main theme of an official visit to Ireland today by the Hungarian Prime Minister, Mr Gyula Horn.

Mr Horn, who was elected to office two years ago and is a founder of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), is expected to support Ireland's position on EU enlargement. The links between the two countries will be stressed during his meeting with the Taoiseach, Mr Bruton, at Government Buildings tomorrow.

The Prime Minister will arrive at Dublin Airport this evening by government jet and will be greeted by the Taoiseach and Mrs Finola Bruton, the Hungarian Ambassador to Ireland, Mr Laszlo Mohai, and the Irish Ambassador to Hungary,

Mr Declan Connolly.

Mr Horn, accompanied by his wife, Ms Anna Kiraly, will meet the Oireachtas Committees on Foreign and European Affairs and will address the Institute of European Affairs tomorrow afternoon.

Following a reception at the Hungarian Embassy in Dublin he will depart for Budapest.
