Jerusalem - Hamas, the militant Islamist party which violently opposes the Middle East peace process, yesterday said it had turned down an invitation from Mr Yasser Arafat to join his Palestinian cabinet in a long-awaited reshuffle, David Sharrock reports.

Hamas will meet with Mr Arafat tomorrow in Gaza on the same day that its spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin is expected to return from a threemonth tour of Arab nations soliciting support for opposition to the moribund Oslo process.
