Kiev - A gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in eastern Ukraine yesterday, killing at least 36 miners and highlighting the catastrophic state of the country's mining industry.

Rescue workers were trying to reach at least 14 miners believed to be still trapped underground, while 22 injured were rushed to hospital in serious condition.

Some 259 miners had been working in the area of the explosion in the Zasyadko pit, in the eastern Donetsk region.
