Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network was behind the threat that caused the FBI to issue an alert today about a possible plan to attack US financial institutions, a US official said.
"Asked who was behind the threat", the official told reporters, "Al-Qaeda".
"We know the origin of it," the official said. However, he cautioned that there may be no such plan afoot. Information about the threat was picked up overseas, the official said on condition of anonymity.
