A MOTORCYCLIST (31) died in a crash in Co Tipperary on Sunday night, bringing the number of weekend fatalities on Irish roads to six.

The man was killed when his motorbike left the road at Powerstown, Clonmel, at about 10.40pm. His body was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital for a postmortem examination. There were no other vehicles involved.

Two women remained in hospital yesterday afternoon after being struck by a car at a church car park in Tramore, Co Waterford, on Saturday night. Their condition is described as stable.

Another woman killed in the incident has been named locally as Margaret Kelly (70), from Roselawn in Tramore.

A fourth woman was discharged from hospital on Sunday.

A four-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in Cork University Hospital after being knocked down by a coal lorry in Cork. He was playing with a skateboard at Ardcullen in Knocknaheeny at lunchtime on Friday when he was knocked down. The incident is being treated as an accident.

Prayers were offered at Masses in Cork city yesterday for the boy and his parents. The boy was set to enrol in junior infants this morning at a local primary school.

Gardaí have named the man who died when his motorbike collided with a tractor near Listowel, Co Kerry, on Sunday morning as James Griffin (28), of Lixnaw, Tralee.

The deaths bring the number of people killed on the State’s roads this year to 197, about 10 per cent down on last year.
