Welsh police investigating the shooting of an Irish lorry-driver on a dual-carriage in north Wales are treating the attack as attempted murder.

The 23 year-old man from Tallaght, whose name has not been released, is in Whiston Hospital, Liverpool, recovering from gun shot wounds. His injuries are not thought to be serious.

The incident occurred at 1.55 p.m. yesterday after two men in what is believed to have been a white Vectra car flagged his lorry down on the island of Anglesea about 15 minutes after leaving Holyhead. It is understood he was asked what goods he was transporting and was then fired upon at point-blank range.

A spokesman for the company TNT, to whom the driver was subcontracted, said they wished the driver a "swift and complete recovery" and that a manager from TNT in Dublin had accompanied the driver’s parents to Britain to visit their son.

Welsh Police have set up an incident room and say they have not established a motive for the attack. Nothing was stolen from the almost-empty lorry which was carrying clothing.

"The North Wales Police are treating this serious incident as a major investigation, with over 20 officers currently working on the investigation," a statement issued this afternoon said.
