A loyalist was today jailed for three years for making a hoax bomb call about Holy Cross school in breach of his release terms under the Belfast Agreement.

Gary Smith (38) is only the second prisoner, after Johnny Adair, to have his licence revoked.

Belfast Crown Court had heard that Smith, from Columbia Street, Belfast, claimed he was from the Red Hand Defenders, a cover name for the UDA, as he made the hoax bomb call to UTV on June 25th. He was unaware he was being watched by police waiting to arrest him.

Smith was also unaware that two days earlier the Secretary of State Dr John Reid had ordered his re-arrest to return him to prison.

Following the hoax call army bomb experts found a suspect package placed inside the railings of the Ardoyne girl's school taht appeared to be a pipe-bomb type device but was a hoax.

Lord Justice McCollum said the bomb call was meant to "ferment sectarian hatred and violence". The judge said the-then "riotous picketing of the access of children to Holy Cross school was a shameful episode".

He said those involved had "no conception of how debased their behaviour was and how far below the standards of basic civilisation or with what abhorrence any normal person would regard it".

Smith was jailed for 16 years in 1995 for conspiracy to murder and having guns.
