The Government must draft a “risk register” of critical infrastructure such as the Poolbeg power plant, coastal railway lines and water treatment plants which are threatened by floods, the Irish Academy of Engineering said yesterday.

Presenting its latest assessment of potential climate-change effects to Minister for the Environment John Gormley, the academy said the Government had to consider urgently whether flood protection schemes similar to the Thames barrier in London might in future be needed for Ireland.
