British house prices fell for a second straight month in November by dropping 0.4 per cent, the Halifax said today.

House prices in the three months to November were also down 0.4 per cent on the previous three months although house prices were still up 16.8 per cent in the three months to November compared with a year ago.

One month ago the Halifax said house prices fell 1.1 per cent in October, their sharpest monthly decline in four years. They were up an annual 18.5 per cent in the three months to October.

"Last month's modest fall was smaller than the declines in August and October, suggesting that a measured slowdown may be underway," said Mr Martin Ellis, chief economist at HBOS.
