The bodies of the Iranian twins who died when surgeons tried to separate their fused heads left Singapore this morning for the sisters' homeland.

The parents of twins Ladan and Laleh Bijani were expected to be at the airport in Tehran to take the bodies away to their home town for burial, Iranian embassy officials said.

Iran's government, which plans a national ceremony in honour of the twins, has expressed sadness over the deaths but no anger, despite some medical ethicists saying the surgery was too risky to attempt.

Ladan and Laleh died on Tuesday, 90 minutes apart, from a severe loss of blood as doctors were in the final stages of a marathon operation that began on Sunday.
