More than 50 firefighters were last night attempting to take control of a major fire which broke out at a wood preservative company in Little Island, Cork.

The fire started at the Protim Services Timber Preservation and Damp Proofing outlet shortly after 7pm last night.

Up to 17 units of the fire brigade from Cork, Cobh and Midleton quickly rushed to the scene after huge columns of smoke were spotted coming from the area.

The cause of the fire was not known.

Gardaí from Cork, Cobh and Midleton were at the scene last night co ordinating the cordoning off of the site.

A full forensic examination of the premises will be carried out today.

It is understood there was no one in the building when the fire broke out.
