THE Hewitt Summer School, an event which has been sadly embroiled in controversy since the resignation of Edna Longley from the committee, seems no longer under threat. A group of Longley's friends and colleagues had gathered a long list of heavyweight academic and literary names on a letter protesting about Longley's treatment. The Arts Council of Northern Ireland has, however, agreed to continue to fund the school, and the school committee last week issued a statement welcoming this "continued full support." It also paid tribute to Longley: "As a committee member for eight years, she made a significant contribution to the emergence of the school, as one of the premier summer schools in Ireland."
