LETTER writing could enjoy a revival in popularity if all the desks included in the next auction to be conducted by Mullen's of Laurel Park find buyers. A Victorian walnut and ebony writingdesk, dating from circa 1860, has an estimate of £4,000-£6,000; the same figure has been put on a large mahogany partner's desk with gilt leather inset.

Among the lady's desks offered is one in rosewood (£2,500-£3,500) and another in rosewood and marquetry (£1,800-£2,200). There is also a generous selection of cabinets, such as the French gothic walnut piece dating from around 1870 (£3,000-£4,000) and the mid-19th century walnut side cabinet (£2,500-£3,500). A large continental display cabinet is expected to make £3,500-£5,500 and a kingwood vernis martin cabinet carries an estimate of £1,500-£2,500.

Probably the earliest piece of furniture in the auction is a George II bowfront corner cupboard (£2,000-£3,000), while the lot with the highest estimate is a mahogany three door bookcase from circa 1900 (£6,000-£8,000).

A couple of other items that are likely to excite interest are a Victorian ebony and burr walnut, inlaid credenza (£2,500-£3,500) and a Georgian chest on chest (£2,000-£3,000). The auction takes place on Monday, June 23rd, starting at 7 p.m.
