Rarely seen McGuinness pictures on show in Dublin

TWO exhibitions currently taking place in Dublin galleries are likely to be of particular interest to collectors

TWO exhibitions currently taking place in Dublin galleries are likely to be of particular interest to collectors. At the Frederick Gallery on South Frederick Street, a collection of paintings and drawings by the late Norah McGuinness opened earlier this week.

McGuinness, who died in 1980, was indisputably one of the most successful women artists of her generation, enjoying particular renown in the last years of her life.

This show includes much work which hasn't been seen in public for several decades, with some dating back to the mid-1920s. While some pictures are just on loan, those for sale start as low as £100.

Along Dublin Bay at Dalkey, the James Gallery is presenting a group show of pictures and sculpture, which includes a handsome etching by James Abbott McNeill Whistler called Soupe a Trois Sous, a fine example of the American born artist's work in this medium.

The same exhibition also features another engraving, Snap Apple Night, after a painting by Daniel Maclise, as well as works by Daniel O'Neill, Maurice C. Wilks and a charming watercolour by Henry Gastinuau of boys chasing a mouse.
