Daft Punk

Tron: Legacy EMI *****

While it's hard to believe that Daft Punk have never written a film score until now, it's almost mind boggling that Disney, the most conservative studio in Hollywood, allowed first-time director Joseph Kosinski to hire the French electro-dance duo for a $200 million film. Either way, their debut score is astonishing. Deftly mixing bright melodies and pounding beats with driving strings and brooding electronica, Daft Punk's sophisticated score surges with pulse-racing action, edgy suspense and occasional flashes of exquisite lyricism – as befits the story of a young gamer looking for his long lost father in a videogame. With knowing nods to minimalist composer Philip Glass and maximalist scorer Hans Zimmer, Tron: Legacyis also delightfully and self- consciously cool in its dynamic fusion of dance and classical music. The result is one of the most original and exciting scores of 2010. See disney.go. com/tron
