Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,1958 - A young Newman plays Brick, an alcoholic ex-football player who drinks his days away and resists the affections of his wife, Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor). Earns first of 10 Oscar nominations.

The Hustler, 1961 - Newman plays Edward "Fast Eddie" Felson, a Californian pool player who travels to New York to take on Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason).

Hud, 1963 - Newman confirms his status as a bad boy pin-up by playing a womanising Texan cowboy. Nominated for a best actor Oscar for the third time.

Cool Hand Luke, 1967 - Newman stars as Luke, who gets sent to a Florida prison camp but who refuses to conform to the system. The film contains one of the most memorable movie lines: "What we've got here, is failure to communicate."

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969 - Newman and Robert Redford play the leaders of the bank-robbing Hole in the Wall Gang. The film won four Oscars.

The Sting, 1973 - Set in 1930s, Newman and Redford pair up to play professional schemers intent on conning money from a mob boss. The film won seven Oscars.

The Towering Inferno, 1974 - Disaster movie in which a fire engulfs the world's largest skyscraper. Newman plays architect Doug Roberts, who helps fire chief Michael O'Halloran (Steve McQueen) to fight the flames.

The Absence of Malice, 1981 - Newman plays Michael Gallagher investigated for a murder he did not commit.

The Colour of Money, 1984 - The film continues the story of pool-hall shark Fast Eddie from The Hustler. Newman won an Oscar for his role alongside Tom Cruise.

Road to Perdition, 2002 - Newman received a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.
