Club career: At 16 McCabe, who started out with Waterford side Johnsville FC, was signed by Bill Nicholson for Spurs (in 1980), spending four years at the club but failing to make the breakthrough into the first team. In 1984 he moved to Norway, joining second division Vard before switching to Tromso (near the Arctic circle) four seasons later and Viking Stavanger in 1991. Back trouble forced his retirement after just four games for Stavanger.

International career: Won eight Irish schoolboys' caps and also made it in to the youth team.

Where is he now? McCabe, who is now 34 and settled in Norway, originally trained as a welding inspector for a Scottish company servicing old oil rigs but is now marketing officer for Viking Stavanger and manager of second division side Hana.
