Madam, – As this is Positive Ageing Week, your readers might be interested to hear of some positive experiences and of the informal kindnesses shown to the many of elderly in our country.

My father, who is in his 91st year, now lives in Carlow on his own. The other day he commented on how “special” he (and he reckons other elderly folk) are made to feel by so many.

He was referring to many informal and professional kindnesses shown to him. The most striking of these kindnesses has been shown by the staff (multi-nationality) in the local hotel where he lunches every day of the week. One of the waitresses even invited him to her wedding! Is this unique to country living or are there similiar experiences for city dwellers I wonder? – Yours, etc,
