Gardaí investigating the shooting of a man in Co Mayo have released a second man this evening from custody. The man had been held for questioning at Castlebar Garda Station.

A file on the case has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

John Ward (43) was shot at a farm near the town of Claremorris yesterday, after two men "attempted to enter a property" at around 2.20 p.m, according to a Garda spokeswoman.

The scene at Funchona, a mile outside Cross, on the Glencorrib Road has been preserved for forensic examination.

A post mortem on the body of Mr Ward, in south Mayo, was carried out at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar earlier today.

Gardaí in Castlebar last night released another man (18) they had been holding in relation with the incident.
