A murder investigation has been launched by police in Northern Ireland following the death of a man in Co Derry early this morning.
The 28-year-old man died in hospital after suffering an assault outside a nightclub in Portstewart at around 2am.
A 20-year-old man is being questioned and police have appealed for witnesses to the assault to come forward.
SDLP East Derry Assembly Member John Dallat who was in the town in the earlier part of the evening expressed his shock at the death. "Taxis were going about taking young people to various places of entertainment and the town was very peaceful. It is hard to take that a young man would later be dead and a family plunged into mourning.
"I have spoken to the police this morning and they are doing everything
possible to establish what led up to this unfortunate incident and I would ask anyone who knows anything about the circumstances to get in touch with the PSNI immediately."
