Improvements for the country's 33,000 full-time carers were announced today, with promises of more respite and grant increases.
Pledging his determination to boost recognition of the valued role of carers, Minister for Social Affairs Seamus Brennan vowed to raise the annual Respite Care Grant from €1,000 to €1,200.
It will be available to all carers providing full-time care to an older person or someone with disability regardless of their means.
The number of hours which someone can work and still receive a carer's benefit has also increased from 10 to 15 hours per week.
"Carers make a valued and valuable contribution to Irish society through their dedication and sacrifice," said Mr Brennan.
"I want that work to be recognised and acknowledged through increased benefits and practical support measures.
"I am determined to work for carers and with carers to continue to deliver substantially increased benefits, proper recognition payments and the services and supports which provide practical help for those people who devote their time and energy to improving the quality of life for others."
